Plastic Test Methods: Film Specimens and Report Fields

Plastic test methods only make a useful film decision when the test question, specimen identity, method edition, conditions, units, and decision rule travel with the result. This guide will not cover soil plasticity testing or Atterberg limits, and will focus on plastic film specimens and supplier test reports.

Bring the film structure, lot and roll identity, application problem, named method and edition, conditioning record, and the original report if available.

Plastic Test Method Selection by Decision

The first choice is not an ASTM or ISO number. The decision that the result will support should come first, followed by the family of properties and the currently valid method that covers the form, failure mode, and comparison of the material. Mechanical properties, barrier behaviour, and optical behaviour are separate evidence families; ASTM D882-26 and ISO 527-3:2018, for example, are tensile routes with their own scope.

Use a specimen-level method when the decision concerns thickness, tensile response, tear, puncture, impact, friction, seal, barrier, optical behaviour, or dimensional change.

Use the method edition and report fields to decide whether values share the same measurement basis before ranking suppliers or lots.

Start from the observed packaging problem and combine the relevant property methods instead of making one mechanical property stand for the complete package.

Plastic Test Method Selection by Decision

Scope rule: methods written for rigid plastic materials, injection molding or compression molded specimens, flexural properties, or compressive properties answer different questions. A thermoplastic film result should not be transferred merely because both records are described as polymer testing or as plastic testing.

Film Specimen Identity and Sampling Controls

A plastic film test specimen is evidence about the material that was actually cut, conditioned, and measured. It will not represent every layer, position, roll, production lot, or finished package unless the sampling plan establishes that connection.

Film Specimen Identity and Sampling Controls
Identity field
Minimum useful record
Decision risk when missing
Film construction
Polymer family such as polyethylene, polypropylene (PP), or a coextruded composite, plus grade or supplier code, layer structure, extrusion and coating history, treatment side, and relevant additive identity
Different plastic materials or surface states can be pooled under one generic film name.
Source identity
Supplier, lot, roll, production date or code, and sample receipt date
A local specimen result can be mistaken for lot-level evidence.
Sampling location
Roll edge/centre position, machine direction position, package location, and number of locations
Within-roll or within-package variation disappears inside one average.
Direction and face
Machine direction, transverse direction, inside/outside face, or seal face
Anisotropy or surface behaviour is mislabeled as random variation.
Thickness basis
Method, measurement locations, individual readings, summary value, and value used for normalization
Force may be mislabeled as tensile strength, or results may use different geometric bases.
Specimen form
Flat, embossed, printed, laminated, folded, aged, converted, or cut from a finished package
The selected method may exclude the actual specimen form.

ISO 4593:1993 remains current after confirmation in 2025 for mechanical-scanning thickness measurement, but its public scope excludes embossed film or sheeting. Even a basic thickness field therefore needs a method and specimen-form check.

The reporting of thickness variation may be decision-unhelpful where the measurement locations and the basis of the summary are missing. Two laboratories may both report a compliant average, however one may have scanned the edge of the roll, whereas the other may have scanned the centre, resulting in the buyer reading a difference in the film where the sampling position actually holds the difference.

Conditioning, Direction, and Preparation Records Visual

Conditioning, Direction, and Preparation Records

Conditioning and preparation will also be included in the result record as they define the state of the material when presented to the test. ISO 291:2008 covers conditioning atmospheres for plastic testing, but the controlled condition is still defined by the selected method, material specification, or contract. The risk is a conditioning gap because the official page for ISO 291:2008 is only a baseline; the selected method and contract must remain visible in the report.

  • Record storage, ageing, thermal exposure, humidity, light, chemical, or conversion exposure.
  • Identify film face, orientation, and sample location before cutting.
  • Separate specimens from different rolls, lots, layers, or package positions.
  • Confirm that the specimen form is inside the method scope.
  • Record conditioning temperature, relative humidity, duration, and test atmosphere.
  • Record preparation method, cutting direction, dimensions, edge or surface condition, and exclusions.
  • Identify any specimen rejected before testing and why.
  • Preserve deviations from the governing method as report fields.

Film Method-to-Report Control Map

This map channels a plastic film question toward the report fields most likely to influence interpretation. It is not a list of UD Packaging laboratory capabilities, and it does not reproduce a standard procedure.

Film Method-to-Report Control Map
No. Method family Question answered Specimen controls Report controls and hard boundary
01 Thickness What geometric basis describes the film? Layer structure, surface form, roll position, measurement locations Name method, resolution, individual readings, summary and units; do not apply ISO 4593 to embossed film.
02 Tensile How does the film respond to directional tension? MD/TD, width, thickness basis, gauge basis, edges, conditioning Name method and edition, speed, grip/extension route, curve fields and failure; detailed setup belongs to the tensile page.
03 Puncture How does the film respond to localized penetration? Film face, clamping geometry, thickness, specimen history Name probe/striker route, speed, force/deflection or energy outputs, units and failure description.
04 Impact How does the film respond to a defined dynamic impact? Thickness, conditioning, specimen count, temperature, relative humidity Name method route, velocity, force-time or force-deflection basis, energy and failure. ISO 7765-2:2025 applies to instrumented puncture impact for films up to 1 mm.
05 Tear Does the question concern tear initiation or propagation? Direction, cut/notch geometry, thickness, edge condition Name method, direction, geometry, force or energy definition and units; do not merge different tear mechanisms.
06 Friction or cling How do defined surfaces start or continue moving or adhering? Inside/outside face, contact pair, age, surface treatment, conditioning Name static/dynamic route, speed, delay and surface pair. ASTM D1894-24 results cannot be directly compared with ISO 8295 results.
07 Seal or bond How was a seal formed, opened, or held? Seal faces, preparation, dwell, pressure, temperature and ageing Name method, seal-making history, peel geometry, rate, failure mode and units; one seal value is not a complete process window.
08 Barrier At what rate does a named gas or water vapour pass under defined conditions? Structure, thickness, exposed area, orientation and preconditioning Name method, temperature, humidity, gradient, gas, area-time units and steady-state basis; never transfer across unaligned conditions.
09 Optical or dimensional How does appearance or size respond under defined conditions? Orientation, thickness, background, heat or exposure history Name optical geometry or treatment, units, individual values and statistics; do not use an optical value as a mechanical-property substitute.

Report Scope Inputs Before Supplier Review

The extent of the review largely depends upon the number of plastic film constructions, lots, directions, method families, result files, and application decisions, and material qualification can take longer when application constraints and evidence requests arrive late. One cannot infer the price or turnaround time based on a published laboratory rate since it would neither establish the terms of UD Packaging nor the limits of the request. The supply terms that we have committed to are outlined in how we work with film buyers.

Remaining application-level validation

Imagine a procurement review that contains two suppliers that each have sent a friction report for what a purchase order describes as the same film. Under ASTM D1894-24, friction data may vary with film age, surface condition, additives, and process history, and a report that states a nominal 25 µm with no roll position and a report that states it’s 30 µm measured at the roll edge cannot be used interchangeably by a supplier in a ranking exercise. A common reference name creates only a standard when the specimen record, the edition, and the conditions accompany the value.

Report Fields for Comparable Plastic Test Results

Two values reported according to ASTM D882-26 and to ISO 527-3:2018 still need edition, specimen, and condition alignment before either one is ranked against the other. Any plastic test report should let another qualified reviewer reconstruct what was tested, how the result was defined, and which decision it may support. A polished certificate or spreadsheet is not enough when the specimen, method route, condition, or exception remains hidden.

Report Fields for Comparable Plastic Test Results

A report may name a standard without describing whether the tested material was the purchased material, what edition was used, or what condition defined the value. This is not a formatting issue. It decides whether the number can provide a basis for a purchase decision.

How We Work From Test Question to Supplier Review

The same six-step handoff is applicable whether the input is a new plastic test request or an existing supplier report. The aim is to prevent a result from being promoted into a material ranking before the scope and basis of the decision is known.

  • Specify the decision to be made.

Indicate the failure, property, specification limit, comparison, or the investigation for which the evidence is required.

  • Choose the method family.

Ensure that the property and specimen form are included in the currently defined method.

  • Lock the specimen record.

Distinguish different structures, lots, rolls, locations, faces, directions, conditioning states, and exposure histories.

  • Capture the method route.

Describe the edition, procedure, conditions, key settings, units, and result definitions, and state any indicated deviations.

  • Examine the report.

Keep all individual values, replicates, and statistics. Keep invalid results, uncertainties, and stated limits.

  • Return to the application.

Decide whether the evidence supports screening, comparison, conformity review, or whether another property or package-level test is necessary.

When One Plastic Test Method Is Not Enough

A method is defined as a response measured under certain defined constraints. A method does not provide a guarantee for all the ways a film can fail during conversion, packaging, storage and transport. As an example, a high result on tensile strength will not provide evidence of puncture resistance, tear propagation, seal integrity, barrier protection, or friction and load stability.

Combine property methods

Use more than one specimen-level method when the application depends on several independent mechanisms such as stretch, puncture, tear, slip, sealing, and barrier.

Add application validation

Use conversion trials, equipment trials, finished-package tests, or load-level validation when the decision concerns actual process or distribution performance.

The mistake is treating a single strong result as a guarantee for the package. A high tensile value offers no protection for puncture resistance, and the tell is a report is asked to answer a question that its method never measured. In its place, name the failure mode, and then add either the property method or the package level test that observes it.

How We Work With Film Buyers

A test report provides an answer for the material. The terms below provide other answers for the buying decision, so a slow quotation or missing supporting documents will not prevent a packaging change that is supported by the evidence. Every figure here is UD Packaging's commitment to supply, not a lab's capacity.

Plastic Test Methods FAQs

Which plastic test method should be selected for film?

Start with the decision or failure mode, confirm that the specimen form is inside the method scope, and then check the current edition and contract requirements. Do not start from the standard number alone.

Does the same ASTM or ISO name make two reports comparable?

No. The edition, procedure route, specimen, conditioning, settings, units, replicates, and statistical basis still need alignment, and the method may contain an explicit restriction on direct comparison.

Can ASTM D1894 results be compared with ISO 8295 results?

ASTM D1894-24 states that it is not equivalent to ISO 8295:1995 and that results cannot be directly compared. The alignment matrix must stop at that method-specific restriction.

Why must water-vapor test conditions stay with the result?

ASTM E96/E96M-24a states that a result from one method and set of conditions cannot predict the result from another method or another condition. Temperature, humidity, gradient, method route, and units therefore remain part of the result identity.

Is ISO 4593 suitable for embossed film?

No. ISO's public abstract for ISO 4593:1993 says the mechanical-scanning thickness method is not suitable for embossed film or sheeting.

What is the current ISO instrumented impact method for film?

ISO 7765-2:2025 is published for instrumented puncture impact characterization of plastic film up to 1 mm. Its public scope covers force-deflection or force-time response under stated conditions.

Which tensile standards may appear in a film report?

ASTM D882-26 and ISO 527-3:2018 are current film or thin-sheet tensile routes within their published scopes. The governing purchase specification and licensed standard edition determine the actual route and required parameters.

What is the current GB/T 1040 status for film?

GB/T 1040.1-2025 is in force, and GB/T 1040.3-2006 remains current on 2026-09-10. GB/T 1040.3-2026 has been published but does not take effect until 2026-12-01.

Does a supplier test report prove conformity?

Not by itself. A conformity statement needs the specified requirement, representative sampling, uncertainty treatment, and the selected decision rule in addition to a valid measurement result.

Does a conforming result release the film for use?

Release is a separate customer decision governed by the applicable quality system, contract, and application validation. This page and its tools do not replace that approval.
